Geneseo art students, under leadership of Associate Pofessor Dan DeZarn, collaborated with high school metal trades students to create decorative angels that 30 Mt. Morris, N.Y., businesses are displaying during the holiday season.
The college and high-school students worked together to design and fabricate the life-sized angels, made from sheets of polished stainless steel that were donated by New York City real estate developer Greg O’Connell ’64, who is helping revitalize the Mt. Morris business community.
The students made the angels with characteristics reflecting each participating business. The angels were later auctioned off to benefit Teresa House, a hospice in Geneseo. /PHOTO BY BRIAN BENNETT
“This was a terrific community service project that mutually benefited our students and the high school students,” said Dan DeZarn, associate professor of art, who teaches the Geneseo metalsmithing class involved in the project. “Our students gained practical skills from the high school students on using welding tools and other machinery, and the high-school students learned art and design techniques from our class members.”
The students fabricated the angels in the metal trades/welding class of Olie Olson at the Charles G. May Career and Technical Center in Mount Morris.
