Improv everywhere
Students blow up balloons and have fun — silently — on Sturges Quad on April 21 as part of an hour-long activity with Improv Everywhere, a New York-based group that orchestrates pranks using "undercover agents," and one of the founders spoke at Geneseo. All of the students listened to an identical MP3 broadcast which told them to do different things — like square dance, freeze or play tag. /PHOTO BY BRIAN BENNETT

Brian DeMarco '96, associate professor of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, helped discover a new form of matter in which atoms behave like waves, when he was 25.
He and his team cool ultra-cold atom gases to a billionth of a degree above absolute zero and traps them in a crystal made of light to study their properties.
Their findings may lead to better energy efficiency and other advancements. /PHOTO PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGNSummer Raines2

"Research shows that students who take an active part in their own learning retain more information and are more successful in their post-undergraduate careers. I think small colleges like Geneseo are best at fostering this kind of learning atmosphere." — Summer Raines '03 /PHOTO BY JOHN SUMROW/UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO
traditions
Check! Students complete something every Geneseo student and alum should do: get their photo taken at a hockey game with the Geneseo Knight.
The Undergraduate Alumni Association launched a project this year that lists 11 rites of passage for students and activities to help them do all 11 before they graduate. The project hopes to preserve traditions at Geneseo, remember ones lost to time and generate new. /PHOTO BY KEITH WALTERS ' 11
