Brian DeMarco '96, associate professor of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, helped discover a new form of matter in which atoms behave like waves, when he was 25.
He and his team cool ultra-cold atom gases to a billionth of a degree above absolute zero and traps them in a crystal made of light to study their properties.
Their findings may lead to better energy efficiency and other advancements. /PHOTO PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN
